Has 'Uber for Barges' Arrived on the Rivers?

Basin Commerce, a new data startup and e-commerce platform that launched in 2016, promises to do for barges and commodities in need of shipment what Uber has done for drivers and passengers: get them together in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.
If it succeeds, it will bring the Big Data revolution to river transportation in a way that no other company yet has. It is billing itself as “the first and only online marketplace where shippers of bulk freight can locate, purchase and mange transportation and logistics services on the U.S. inland waterway system. This includes trucking, storage, transload and barge services throughout the U.S.A.”
The company wants to be a one-stop shop for commodity shippers. According to chief executive officer Tom Venable, “We’re the only company going down this ‘river’.”
