Based on the shores of Lake Minnetonka just outside Minneapolis, Basin Commerce aims to increase the utilization of the US Waterway System for the transport of bulk materials and other heavy loads that are typically moved via rail and trucks. For shippers of bulk commodities, the waterway system is often economically superior than other modes, is ecologically sound via greater fuel efficiencies and reduction in pollution and helps to reduce the amount of traffic and congestion on our roadways.
Our growing list of buyers we work with leverage Basin to move bulk via the waterway systems, tapping into our extensive domestic network of barge, terminal and transload partners. Our vision is to build an ‘Expedia-like' platform experience when looking to book transportation for large quantities of bulk materials and other heavy load projects.

Tom Venable, CEO
As an executive, entrepreneur and professional business coach, Tom has had a hand in launching and growing over 20 companies in the software, SaaS and ecommerce industries. For over 30 years he organized, recruited, and structured sales, marketing and delivery teams on a global basis while delivering high value for investors, customers and employees. Additionally he has deep experience in raising capital, M&A and managing public companies. At Basin, Tom guides the vision and implementation of Basin’s strategy to create value for our partners and providers.
Pete Olson, Chief Builder
A software leader with 20 years’ experience in SaaS environments with a focus on customer development, product management, client services and marketing. At Basin, Pete is responsible for creation and product leadership of the company’s technology platform ensuring product-market fit for both buyers and logistic providers to drive revenue growth and lower costs.
Scott Stefan, VP Sales
Scott has been involved in bulk commodities for the majority of his 30 year trading career, involving a diverse set of products including salt, barite, sand, edibles (cheese) and others. In his role as VP Sales, Scott translates the needs of our clients into solution-orientated logistic plans leveraging his extensive network of provider contacts.
Dan Moldenhauer, Controller
As a seasoned finance professional and CPA (inactive), Dan has over 30 years combined public accounting and private industry experience, including over 15 years of financial leadership to technology and SAAS driven businesses. Working predominately with entrepreneurial and emerging environments over the past two decades, Dan has vast experience with private equity, M&A and integration activities.
Tyler Stefan, Director of Sales
After graduating from the University of Minnesota (TC) Tyler learned the art of sales and client engagement at several start-up and early growth companies. Today, Tyler oversees several strategic relationships as well as Basin's terminal partner network, diligently growing & expanding the Basin network into emerging marketplaces to assist driving down final mile (LTL & OTR) logistical costs.
As a terminal owner and operator for the past 25 years, Dan has spent over half of his life immersed in transportation and logistics on the Upper Mississippi. He has worked with companies of all sizes moving a wide variety of products including grains, urea, sand and salt, as well as irons, distiller’s dried grains and other specialty products. Dan provides industry guidance and expertise for Basin Commerce as we modernize and simplify the day to day interactions between bulk customers and providers.
